While 2020 was a difficult year for Latin America, large parts of Asia, above all China, in fact recorded growth. According to experts, the latter is likely to continue in 2021, as Asia is broadly positioned in future-relevant sectors.

This raises the question about how much it makes sense to classify both regions into the same group of Emerging Markets. This becomes even more obvious by looking at the MSCI Emerging Markets sector index with a weight of approx. 70 percent in Asian countries. Its performance in 2020 was therefore quite positive, with an increase of almost 50 percent.
The main reason for a potential continuation of this positive performance trend in 2021 would be Asia’s long-term growth potential in various innovative areas, including:

  • … information technology
  • … communications
  • … healthcare

Among others the question of investment opportunities in Asia in times of Corona will be discussed during the web conference on “Emerging Markets Perspectives” by Andrew Mattock, Portfolio Manager at Matthews Asia; organized by Capitalmarket Events on April 15, 2021 at 4pm.
